The Holy Qur’an presents human sensory attributes as vital instruments for understanding reality, shaping behavior, and guiding spiritual development. Among these, hearing (sam‘) and sight (basar) are emphasized not only as physical faculties but as moral and spiritual responsibilities. Mufti Muhammad Shafi Usmani, in his exegetical masterpiece Ma‘ariful Qur’an, interprets these sensory attributes as divine gifts meant to be used for the pursuit of truth, faith, and obedience to Allah, rather than for negligence or deviation. His interpretive insights link Qur’anic verses with theological, ethical, and social dimensions, highlighting how neglecting the rightful use of hearing and sight leads to spiritual blindness and moral decline. Modern psychology, on the other hand, views sensory attributes as fundamental to human cognition, emotional development, and social interaction. Research in cognitive psychology and neuroscience demonstrates how hearing and sight affect memory, learning, decision-making, and personality formation. This study critically juxtaposes Mufti Usmani’s interpretative views with psychological theories to present a holistic framework where Qur’anic guidance and scientific findings complement one another. The analysis demonstrates that the Qur’an’s spiritual insights regarding sam‘and basar offer timeless principles for cultivating awareness, discipline, and moral integrity. Moreover, integrating Qur’anic teachings with modern psychology enriches educational, therapeutic, and ethical practices, thus addressing the challenges of contemporary societies. This interdisciplinary study concludes that a balanced integration of revealed knowledge and human sciences can foster self-awareness, social harmony, and spiritual refinement in a morally challenged world.
