Abstract

Tafsīr Aḍwā’ al-Bayān by Allāmah Muhammad al-Amīn al-Shanqīṭī stands as one of the most distinguished scholarly works of the modern era, known for its rigorous methodology and unique interpretive approach. This study critically examines the distinctive features, methodological principles, and stylistic qualities that make this tafsīr a remarkable contribution to Qur’anic exegesis. Central to Shanqīṭī’s method is tafsīr al-Qur’ān bil-Qur’ān, whereby the Qur’an explains itself through interconnected verses, thematic parallels, and internal coherence. This approach strengthens textual analysis and ensures that meaning remains firmly rooted in divine discourse. Alongside this, the tafsīr demonstrates careful use of authentic Prophetic traditions, insights from the Companions, and a balanced engagement with classical juristic opinions, particularly when addressing legal and ethical issues. The study explores Shanqīṭī’s profound command of Arabic linguistics, rhetoric, and grammar, which enriches his exegetical discussions and clarifies complex expressions with precision. His rational yet tradition-grounded method distinguishes Aḍwā’ al-Bayān from both purely narrative and overly speculative commentaries. A comparative assessment with major works—such as those of Ibn Kathīr, al-Ṭabarī, al-Rāzī, al-Zamakhsharī, and al-Ṭabāṭabā’ī—highlights the tafsīr’s balance between textual fidelity, jurisprudential depth, and linguistic mastery. This research concludes that Aḍwā’ al-Bayān offers a comprehensive, coherent, and intellectually mature model of Qur’anic interpretation that remains particularly relevant for contemporary scholarship, curriculum development, and informed religious discourse in the Muslim world.
