The Breath of Mystery: Epiphanies of the Spirit in the Qur’anic Discourse of the Unseen
نَفْحَةُ السِّرّ: تجلياتُ الرُّوح في خطاب الغيب القرآني
Keywords:
Spirit (Rūḥ), Divine Command, Revelation, Spiritual Ascension, Qur’anic Mysticism.Abstract
This article explores the concept of Rūḥ (Spirit) not by attempting to define it philosophically or categorically, but by attentively listening to its silent presence and symbolic whispers within the Qur’anic discourse. The study traces the Spirit as a luminous and sacred secret—an echo of the Divine Command—moving through five metaphysical stations: as a command from the Lord beyond limits; as a holy breath dignifying clay; as a revelation descending upon the purified heart of the Prophet; as a return at the moment of death; and ultimately, as the spiritual journey of the mystic toward Divine annihilation (fanāʾ). Rather than offering rational answers, the article treats the Rūḥ as a mystical key—one that opens the inner consciousness of humanity to its origin, purpose, and eternal yearning. Drawing on Qur’anic verses, rhetorical analysis, and interpretative traditions—especially those from Sufi exegetes—the research unravels the interplay between the unseen and the revealed, the symbolic and the experiential, the external word and the internal taste (dhawq). The Spirit in the Qur’an emerges not as a mere metaphysical entity but as a dynamic, divine energy that animates, guides, and elevates. This study adopts both an objective and aesthetic method to investigate how the Qur’an speaks of the Spirit: as creation, as inspiration, as resurrection, and ultimately, as Divine presence. It invites the reader not to define the Rūḥ, but to walk with it—toward Light.
