Calligraphy, in Islamic civilization, is not merely a decorative art but a revered medium of preserving and transmitting divine knowledge. The art of writing, referred to by Ishaq Siddiqui as mankind’s greatest invention after language, has played a pivotal role in shaping human civilization. In the Islamic world, Muslim calligraphers have contributed immensely to the promotion, protection, and dissemination of Islamic sciences. This paper explores the multifaceted contributions of these calligraphers, whose refined aesthetic sensibilities and spiritual devotion transformed calligraphy into a sacred craft. The first revelation to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the importance of reading and writing, symbolizing the pen as a divine instrument of knowledge. Muslim calligraphers, aware of this sacred responsibility, meticulously preserved the Qurʾān, Ḥadīth, Fiqh, and other Islamic disciplines through their precise and artistic inscriptions. From the Kufic script of early Islam to the refined Naskh and Thuluth styles of later centuries, their work ensured both aesthetic beauty and textual integrity. The study highlights prominent Muslim calligraphers such as Ibn Muqlah, Ibn al-Bawwāb, and Yāqūt al-Mustaʿṣimī, whose contributions shaped the legacy of Islamic writing. Additionally, the paper examines the role of modern calligraphers and printing advancements in continuing this tradition. By blending art with devotion, Muslim calligraphers played an indispensable role in preserving Islamic heritage and inspiring future generations through the beauty of the written word.
