Abstract

Orientalism has left a significant intellectual footprint in the Muslim world, particularly in the study of the Prophet Muhammad’s biography (Sīrah). While many Orientalist perspectives are biased or based on inaccurate assumptions, some have attempted objective research. Dr. Muhammad Husayn Haykal (1888–1965), an eminent Egyptian writer, politician, and intellectual educated at the Sorbonne, represents a unique case among modern Muslim scholars who engaged with Orientalist thought. His celebrated work The Life of Muhammad (1935) reflects a blend of traditional Islamic scholarship and modern Western historical methods. Haykal sought to approach the Prophet’s life through a “scientific method” — detaching himself from preconceived beliefs during analysis — yet he retained essential Islamic convictions, rejecting Orientalist claims such as the denial of revelation or the attribution of epilepsy to the Prophet. Nonetheless, he adopted certain analytical frameworks from Orientalist scholarship, questioning some traditional reports like the incident of shaqq al-sadr (splitting of the chest) and emphasizing historical plausibility. This study examines Haykal’s biography, political and intellectual background, and his exposure to Western academia. It further analyzes how Orientalist methodologies influenced specific interpretations in The Life of Muhammad. By employing a critical-analytical approach, the research distinguishes between Haykal’s independent reasoning and direct Orientalist borrowings. It also explores the broader phenomenon of Muslim authors integrating Orientalist perspectives into Sīrah literature. Ultimately, the paper argues that while Haykal’s methodology incorporated certain Western academic tools, his intellectual independence and rootedness in Islamic belief allowed him to navigate Orientalist claims without fully capitulating to them.
