Abstract

Drug abuse is a destructive phenomenon that endangers human health, dignity, and future. In the modern era, it has emerged as one of the most alarming social problems, affecting individuals and societies alike. In Islam, the prohibition of intoxicants is established in the Qur’an through a gradual four-stage process, culminating in a complete ban, while Hadith literature identifies drug consumption as a significant sign of the approaching Day of Judgment. Drugs impair physical and mental health, leading to various diseases, destroying families, eroding moral and social values, and increasing crime rates. The youth, as the backbone of society, are particularly vulnerable, and their potential is often wasted due to addiction. In Pakistan, the rising drug epidemic is fueled by weak faith, bad company, loneliness, unlawful earnings, misuse of medication, depression, pretension, failures, easy accessibility of drugs, and lack of awareness. Islam offers a comprehensive preventive strategy that emphasizes spiritual and moral reform alongside practical measures. These include regular recitation of the Qur’an, remembrance of Allah, good companionship, strengthening family bonds, timely marriages, lawful livelihood, proper medical guidance, self-care, sincerity in actions, establishing justice, avoiding oppression, and acquiring religious knowledge. By implementing these measures, individuals and communities can protect themselves and future generations from the scourge of drugs. This research critically examines drug use, its Islamic prohibition, societal and personal harms, and offers practical solutions grounded in the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah.
