Abstract

Rumor-mongering is a form of falsehood. It is a social and moral issue that affects both individuals and society at large. Rumors are not merely based on hearsay; at times, they incite fear, anxiety, and mistrust. In an environment of social uncertainty, rumors spread rapidly, and people tend to believe them without verification. The greatest harm of rumor-mongering is that it blurs the line between truth and falsehood. Rumors often damage the reputation of individuals, institutions, and even national unity. History bears witness that many major riots and conflicts have been ignited by rumors. In the era of social media, rumor-mongering has become even easier, where a single false piece of news can reach thousands within moments. Islam strictly forbids spreading rumors and emphasizes investigation and verification. The Holy Qur’an clearly commands: "If a wicked person brings you any news, investigate it first..." (Surah Al-Hujurat: 6). Rumor-mongering is not only a sin but also poses serious social consequences. It is the responsibility of every citizen not to believe in rumors or participate in spreading them. Education, awareness, and media must play their part in informing the public. To curb rumor-mongering, each individual must work on self-reform. Insight, caution, and moral upbringing are the only true barriers that can stand against the flood of rumors.
This paper adopts an academic and research-oriented approach to the subject.
