Use of Purified or Treated Water in the Light of Islamic Jurisprudence

Abstract

This research explores the use of treated water from the perspective of Islamic jurisprudence, emphasizing its necessity for cleanliness and health preservation. The study is divided into three chapters: the use of treated water in eating and drinking, in ablution and ritual washing, and in agriculture and industry. It highlights the prohibition of using polluted or untreated water, particularly sewage water, for any consumer purposes due to its harmful effects. The research also addresses the jurisprudential view of the purity of water treated through modern methods. According to Islamic principles, water is deemed pure after impurities are removed, even if trace elements remain. The study explains that most Islamic jurists concur on the permissibility of purifying contaminated water by adding pure substances until it becomes clear and its impurity is eliminated. This finding is especially relevant in modern contexts where water treatment plays a critical role in addressing global water scarcity and ensuring public health. The research emphasizes the alignment of Islamic legal principles with contemporary efforts to reuse and purify water sustainably.
