Abstract

The concept of Non-allegiance (Adem-e-Muwālāt) in Islam represents a foundational Qur’anic and Prophetic principle governing the nature of relationships between Muslims and non-Muslims. It does not advocate absolute social isolation or unconditional hostility; rather, it establishes a balanced framework that distinguishes between religious loyalty and permissible forms of social, political, and economic interaction. This study aims to examine the concept of non-allegiance in the light of the Qur’an and Sunnah, focusing on its textual basis, underlying causes, legal boundaries, and practical implications. The research adopts an analytical and descriptive methodology by examining relevant Qur’anic verses, Prophetic traditions, and the practice of the Companions (Saḥabaḥ). It highlights that the Qur’anic notion of wala’ (allegiance) is closely linked with faith, ideological alignment, and collective security, while bara’ (disassociation) applies only in contexts where religious, ideological, or political hostility exists. The study further demonstrates that the Qur’an explicitly allows justice, kindness, and peaceful coexistence with non-hostile non-Muslims, thereby establishing a framework of conditional and contextual relationships rather than absolute separation. The study concludes that Adem-e-Muwālāt is a principled and balanced doctrine that ensures both the preservation of Islamic identity and constructive engagement with other communities in a pluralistic world.
